Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Stephens, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing locations available in all cities across the Nation. For the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically needed. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing options.

Over recent years, conducting drug tests has increasingly utilized hair follicle drug analysis. A growing number of employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. This type of test is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. A major advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extensive detection timeline for drug usage, generally reaching up to 90 days. Tests are collected through an observed process and are nearly invulnerable to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. A sample taken close to the scalp can reveal up to roughly a 3-month period concerning alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch cut of about 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for examination and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to any other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's preliminary entry into a lab’s database. This process entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective means of excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification to be acknowledged in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most arduous methodology to undertake.

Confirmatory testing of any presumptive positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo a washing process prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection span.
  • Difficulty to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is generally more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
