Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Story, Arkansas. For individuals requiring drug or alcohol screening through hair samples, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for most cases, and these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

In recent times, hair follicle evaluations for drugs have grown more popular. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer these tests over traditional urine-based screenings. Hair follicle assessments are favored by organizations with strict drug policies and legal entities. They detect substance use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection processes ensuring near-impossibility of tampering. However, for detecting very recent use within 5 days, urine evaluations remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective device in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can present an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is non-available, the same quantity of body hair may be taken. In discussions of head hair, we reference scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the lab’s system. This process verifies the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient manner to eliminate drug usage in most samples, but a verified screen is required for legal validity. Any samples appearing presumptively positive in Screening mandate secondary verification.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can signify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is strenuous, rendering more credible results.
  • Supplies historical information: Provides a chronological drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: There is a lag of about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally involve higher costs compared to other testing modalities.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
