Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Success, Arkansas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol exam, our specialty is in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. These tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Over recent years, drug testing often includes hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair over urine tests. Companies with no-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probationary programs utilize these tests due to their extended detection window—up to 90 days—which is conducted under observation and difficult to manipulate. Still, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximate 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis. For EtG, supplemental/extended tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab's system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial scan for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening necessitate an additional verification step.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, an additional hair portion is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
