Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Swain, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we're specialists in hair testing with numerous centers nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body for testing. These analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing often integrates hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer these over the usual urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation cases often choose hair tests due to their prolonged detection window—up to 90 days. They involve supervised collection, making them tough to manipulate but when testing for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the evolving hair strand, hair delivers an extended-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch fragment of about 200 hair strands (approximately equal to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages within the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process certifies that the sample was sealed and dispatched adequately, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a screen positive requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening do need secondary verification.

If a sample registers presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentration levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed as part of the confirmation process when required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug utilization for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a more limited detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to compromise, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical analysis: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
