Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing in Vandervoort, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing across all Nationwide cities ensures accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the head or body. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing preferences.

Hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity in recent years as a drug testing method. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Particularly effective for zero-tolerance environments, these tests offer a detection period up to 90 days, and are tamper-resistant. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hairs as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount needed for screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample entering a laboratory’s protocol. It involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for possible drug use. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to stand in court. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original batch and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug screening is intricate.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows usage trends: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Vandervoort, AR sees substantial benefits with hair follicle testing over urine tests. Notably, the accuracy of detection through hair analysis surpasses traditional methods by capturing a more comprehensive substance use history.

Moreover, the reliability of hair follicle tests provides clearer insights into long-term drug use, which urine tests might miss. This level of precision offers a significant advantage in various monitoring scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Vandervoort, AR offers a thorough review of an individual's substance use. This longitudinal observation is crucial for employers aiming to understand an applicant or employee's history.

The extended monitoring period provided by hair follicle testing outperforms shorter detection spans, ensuring a broader scope of substance history is captured reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
