Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Viola, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide that can administer these tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair drug tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized substances.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained wider adoption compared to traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair drug tests appeal to organizations enforcing strict drug policies, offering a significant detection window of up to 90 days and utilizing an observed collection method, minimizing tampering risks. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for it to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening need secondary verification.

If screening indicates a sample may be positive, more hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening remains the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive must be washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to cheat: It is challenging to bypass a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical data provision: It can outline drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
