Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Violet Hill, Arkansas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we provide nationwide testing centers. Hair tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug analysis. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method to urine tests. Hair tests are favored by stricter workplaces and legal systems due to their extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and challenging anyone attempting to manipulate results. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and drug exposure by locking biomarkers within the growth fibers. When obtained near the scalp, the hair provides around a 90-day detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg, which is ideal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. When we refer to head hair, it’s specifically about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a laboratory drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This includes verifying correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary step to check for drugs of abuse efficiently. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in legal settings. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to techniques like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing notably challenging.

Positive Screening results proceed to Confirmation through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It delineates a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can differ due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Violet Hill, AR, hair follicle testing is emerging as a superior alternative to traditional urine testing. Hair tests offer greater reliability in detecting drug use due to their elongated detection period and resistance to tampering, making them a preferred choice for many employers and legal entities.

Urine tests typically detect recent drug use, but their shorter detection window can be a disadvantage. In contrast, hair tests provide a broader history of substance use, ensuring a comprehensive review of an individual's past.

Extended Detection Window

One of the greatest strengths of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window in Violet Hill, AR. Unlike urine tests that only cover a short duration, hair tests provide insight into drug use over a span of up to 90 days.

Employers benefit from this extended period by obtaining a thorough view of an applicant's or employee's substance use history. It's a comprehensive option that offers peace of mind through its wide-reaching detection capabilities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are notably resistant to tampering, making them a trustworthy choice in Violet Hill, AR. This feature drastically reduces the risk of sample adulteration often seen in other testing methods.

With the ability to provide unquestionable results, hair tests offer unmatched integrity. This robustness forms a reliable base for employers and legal entities looking to detect substance use with surety and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
