Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair analysis drug testing services in Wabash, Arkansas. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol through hair-sample analysis, our expertise covers all your needs, with centers accessible nationwide to conduct the tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used. Hair testing can trace substances, detect alcohol/ETG, and more via tailored options.

Recently, there's been a shift toward using hair follicle drug tests for screening purposes. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts advocate for this method over the traditional urine test. It's favored by organizations with rigid anti-drug guidelines, courts, and probation divisions because it offers an extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is challenging to tamper with. For detection of recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent approach, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers, hair offers an extended overview of drug and alcohol use. When sourced near the scalp, hair provides a detection window of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) from the scalp results in a 100mg collection, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. When conducting EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the amount using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Scalp hair denotes hair on the head alone. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory drug test processing encompasses four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning introduces the sample into the laboratory system. It covers verifying the sample's packaging and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that isn't included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary check for substance misuse, being cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most cases. However, for court-admissible evidence, a positive screen requires confirmation. All samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

For presumptive positives noted during Screening, additional hair from the sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair testing as one of the more intricate methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures validate any positive screening outcomes. Pre-confirmation, all samples marked presumptively positive are cleaned as needed. Each phase of the process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug involvement spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Resistant to deception: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures high accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insight: It depicts a consumption pattern over time rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: In comparison, hair drug tests tend to cost more than other methods.
  • Variable results: Differences in hair attributes like color and individual growth patterns may impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Triumphs Hair follicle testing boasts several benefits over urine tests, particularly regarding reliability and detection accuracy. Hair tests offer a more extended detection time frame, providing a more in-depth view of substance use over time. Businesses and legal authorities prefer this test due to its superior accuracy and the difficulty of tampering with samples, ensuring true representation of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Window of Detection Hair follicle tests offer a substantial advantage with their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This longer period allows employers to gain a thorough insight into an individual's history with drug use, reflecting substance habits over a longer timeline. This insightful detail is invaluable for hiring decisions and compliance with company policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Minimizing Sample Tampering The integrity of hair follicle testing lies in its resistance to tampering, significantly mitigating attempts to adulterate samples. This gives employers and legal entities the confidence in the results they view, knowing that the sample accurately reflects the individual's drug use without manipulation. The method nearly eliminates the chance of inaccurate findings due to external interference.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
