Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Washington, Arkansas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing and extensive network of testing centers across the nation can facilitate the process. With a hair length requirement of 1.5 to 2 inches, samples can often be taken from the crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method over traditional techniques. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are favoring hair tests due to their stringent zero-tolerance stance on drug use. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests provide a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, drastically reducing the likelihood of manipulation. Yet, for recent drug intake within five days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis emerges as a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures enduring records of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal specimen for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate for weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent portion of body hair might be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This involves checking if the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening represents an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears tentatively positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples displaying tentative positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can spot drug use for as long as 90 days, contrary to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Immunity to tampering: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more accurate.
  • Yields historical insights: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over urine tests in Washington, AR? The advantages are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection capabilities with its extended detection window, catching repetitive and occasional use. Traditional urine analysis falls short with its limited timeframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
