Accredited Drug Testing supplies comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Wesson, Arkansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is expert in this field, with testing centers in all major cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair tests offer results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over the standard urine test. This method is adopted by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Its main advantage is the extended detection of drug use up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of substance use over time by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken closer to the scalp, hair can offer up to around a three-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, add-ons, or extensive panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of preliminarily integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This step encompasses ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, substances are extracted from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples tested presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine assessments with shorter detection durations.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug assessment is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage patterns: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use across an extended timeframe, beyond recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly described as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
