Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Fork, Arkansas. In need of a hair drug or alcohol test? We excel in hair testing and boast facilities throughout the nation to administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has been increasingly used for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal countermeasures, and probation mandates have adopted this method. The advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive detection period, up to 90 days. Although superior in many ways, for screening recent drug consumption, urine tests remain the accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly effective for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use through biomarkers trapped in the growing hair strand's fibers. By collecting hair near the scalp, a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs can be achieved. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial inputting of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for most samples, yet a positive screen must be validated for courtroom acceptance. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be identified as presumptively positive in the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to cheat: Hair drug testing is tough to cheat, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other test methods.
  • Variation in results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
