Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in White, Arkansas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, this center is a specialist in hair analysis, boasting testing facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct such evaluations. For a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is typically required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair analysis options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many hiring bodies, courts, and substance counselors are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored for organizations with strict drug policies and by judicial entities. The main advantage is its extended drug use detection capability, up to 90 days, paired with its observed collection process, rendering it nearly foolproof against tampering. Conversely, for detecting recent usage within five days, the urine test remains highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a compelling method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as they develop. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and numerous drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—ideal for initial screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We advocate for weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair solely denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing drug test results incorporates Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be permissible in a legal setting. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva). This characteristic makes hair drug screening one of the more challenging techniques to administer.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter duration.
  • Difficulty to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical usage patterns: Hair testing reveals drug use trends over an extended timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the test pertains to analyzing the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
