In Wilmar, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of a drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is backed by numerous testing centers nationwide, each capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are needed for testing, which can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. This trend is evident among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who often require hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals find this test advantageous because it detects drug use for up to 90 days, is collected under observation, and is difficult to manipulate. However, for drugs used within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach in identifying drug and alcohol use. The hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from the area near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to contamination, and convenient for transport.

By acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, one can obtain 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg amount of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into a laboratory's system. This phase involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and mailed, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for known drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive finding must undergo verification to be legally acceptable. Samples suspected as positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are procured from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids, which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It's significantly complex to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs require 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand, not the underlying follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
