Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wolf Bayou, Arkansas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair evaluations, with testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair is sufficient for testing. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other custom testing selections.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer this over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies in workplaces, legal settings, and probation scenarios. They offer a longer detection window, generally up to 90 days, require observed sampling, and are virtually tamper-proof. However, urine testing remains the most accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair exhibits a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it is exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all additional types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning addresses the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This process involves ensuring the integrity of the sample during sealing and transport, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. Screening is a financially efficient way to negate drug usage in the bulk of samples, but a positive screening necessitates verification to be legally valid. All samples that yield a presumptively positive result during Screening demand another confirmation stage.

If a sample is marked as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair in concentrations much lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before its confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Illustrates historical patterns: It can outline a timeline of drug usage over a duration, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Results may differ: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
