With comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Zinc, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available across all cities in the U.S. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the scalp or body. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over urine tests. Such tests support zero-tolerance policies, legal judgments, and probation monitoring. They are favored for a 90-day detection timeframe, observing sample collection, and resisting tampering. Yet, for detecting recent use under 5 days, urine tests remain effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer extended historical data on alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for tests. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair specifically. "Body hair" encompasses any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab system. This step verifies that the sample is secured and transported correctly, includes assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid test for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to excluding drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result requires validation to be legally acceptable. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as required. The complete laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage information: This can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
