Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Afton, California. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise centers on hair-based tests. Our facilities span cities across the nation, capable of performing these analyses. Generally, having 1.5 to 2-inch hair on the crown or body suffices. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Lately, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a common method for drug analysis. A growing number of employers, legal entities, and substance counselors are opting for hair tests instead of the usual urine exams. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and those under supervision favor it. Its key advantage lies in detecting drug usage over extended periods, up to 90 days, under direct supervision, making it highly tamper-proof. That said, urine exams still lead in accuracy for detecting recent use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-duration record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample are advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. In our references to head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills any additional data entry gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those detected through other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing as required before confirmation. Every part of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows a thorough review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Low susceptibility to tampering: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test makes the results more reliable.
  • Offers usage history: It can reveal a drug use trend over an extended period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
