Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Aguanga, California. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city across the country capable of administering these tests. Generally, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head or body. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a common method in drug testing. A large number of employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair testing supports zero-tolerance policies, making it suitable for workplaces, legal cases, and probation monitoring. It can detect drug use for up to 90 days, making it harder to manipulate compared to urine tests, though the latter remains most accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained prominence as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Procuring hair proximal to the scalp can offer up to a 3-month detection time frame for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, notably resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing more than 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. In regards to head hair, this specifically denotes scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that appear positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to conduct.

The Confirmation of positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides data over time: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
