Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ahwahnee, California. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with facilities located in cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards the hair follicle drug test. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction counselors are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug policies, judiciary bodies, and those on probation. Its major benefit includes a vastly extended detection window of up to 90 days, using an observed collection process, making it nearly fraud-proof. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. This method offers an extended history by sequestering biomarkers in the fiber structure of growing hair strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence within an approximate three-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, comparable in size to a #2 pencil, adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We propose using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, a similar volume of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a laboratory sample. This step confirms that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening outcome necessitates verification for legal acceptance. Samples with presumed positives during Screening must proceed to secondary confirmation.

Samples indicating a positive result in the Screening step undergo additional hair extraction from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), demonstrating why hair drug analysis is notably complex to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation cleansing if required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug analysis is very difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: Offers a consumption outline over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be present in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
