Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Berry Creek, California. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, our specialization in this area ensures we have facilities throughout the nation equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach in drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and professionals in substance abuse prefer hair testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are ideal for those with strict no-drug policies. The main advantage is its extended detection time, usually up to 90 days, and it is collected under observation making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use history for a span of up to approximately three months. Hair is easy to collect, hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair may be retrieved. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is primarily divided into four phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning manages the sample's initial integration into a laboratory’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug presence in the majority of samples; however, a positive outcome necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positives observed in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positives from the Screening stage require more hair from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are obtained from hair at a lower concentration level than other methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The whole laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use over a three-month timespan, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Ensures more dependable results due to the difficulty of cheating a hair drug test.
  • Delivers usage timeline: Reveals a consistent pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outperforms Urine Testing in Berry Creek, CA:
When considering detection capabilities, hair testing excels over traditional urine tests. Hair tests identify drug use over an extended period, providing a more comprehensive substance use history. This advanced method offers higher accuracy and is more reliable, ensuring that employers and other stakeholders receive indisputable results.

While urine tests may capture recent drug use effectively, hair follicle tests offer a long-term perspective. This is particularly beneficial for entities enforcing strict drug-free policies, as it minimizes the risks of drug use going undetected.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Berry Creek, CA, offers an extended detection window that provides significant advantages over other test methods. This approach reveals drug use over a considerably lengthier period, up to 90 days. It allows employers a broader understanding of a potential or current employee's past behavior concerning substance use.

With hair follicle testing, the ability to recount drug usage that dates months back presents a distinct advantage. This method not only helps in making more informed employment decisions but also supports maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Berry Creek, CA, hair follicle drug tests offer a highly tamper-resistant option compared to other testing methods. This test significantly lowers the risk of sample adulteration, providing dependable and irrefutable results. Unlike urine testing, where samples can be modified or substituted, hair tests maintain integrity due to their supervised collection process.

By choosing hair follicle testing, institutions can rest assured of the authenticity of the results. This resistance to tampering enhances the trustworthiness of the testing process, ensuring accurate assessments for all parties involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
