Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Biggs, California. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, our specialization in hair testing ensures accessibility, with centers in various cities across the nation that offer hair evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of cranial or body hair is required for testing. Hair analysis can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug screenings have become increasingly prevalent in conducting drug evaluations. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists commonly prefer hair testing over traditional urine screening. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and those on supervision often rely on hair tests. A key advantage is its extended detection timeframe, monitoring drug usage up to 90 days, while being collected under observation, making it exceptionally difficult to falsify. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hairs as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use history for up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG enhancements and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioned, head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional entry work not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary step to quickly identify drug abuse. While it's a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, Screening positives must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should the Screening stage identify a sample as potentially positive, additional hair is extracted from the given specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

To confirm a positive Screening outcome, tests like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Any presumptive positive samples get a wash before confirmation as needed. The laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is gauged against the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to tamper: It's very tough to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Shows historical patterns: It illustrates a timeline of drug usage, not just recent activities.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect current use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences might impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Biggs, CA
When comparing hair follicle and urine testing, the former offers superior detection accuracy and reliability due to its extended detection period. Hair tests can uncover substance use that urine tests might miss, making them invaluable for stringent drug policies and legal requirements.
Employers benefit from a more thorough history of an individual's substance use, ensuring workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
