Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bodega, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in this area, with locations in cities across the nation ready to administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests are capable of screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug detection. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor this approach. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeline, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and is nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting substance use within the prior five days, the urine test remains the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become widely regarded as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair strands encapsulate long-term usage history by capturing biomarkers within the growth fibers. When collected from near the scalp, hair samples offer an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary and swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admittance. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be challenging, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bodega, CA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Hair testing offers unparalleled detection accuracy, capturing substance use with greater precision. It highlights the inability to easily deceive the test, contrasting the potential vulnerabilities of urine testing. Capable of showing drug use over a 90-day period, this testing method provides a detailed insight into an individual's substance history. Employers can gain a fuller understanding of an employee or applicant's past behavior, aiding in informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
