Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bodfish, California. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts in this field. Our testing facilities are available in cities nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analysis accommodates drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing often involves hair follicle analysis more than before. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists now prefer this over standard urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals utilize hair follicle analyses because they track usage over 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are tough to compromise. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growth of hair encases biomarkers within its strands, offering a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug activity. When the hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal substance use over an approximate three-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, with a low risk of tampering, and can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields roughly 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, extra options, or testing beyond 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the sample. It’s advisable to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair amount can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair alone, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial acceptance of a sample into a lab's protocol. This process checks if the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a confirmed screening result is required for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive during Screening need further validation.

In the case where Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much reduced levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most demanding procedure.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to substantiate any positive screening cases. Samples with initial positive results are rinsed before validation as necessary. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing can identify drug intake for up to three months, unlike urine tests that cover shorter durations.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing results are more accurate because they're hard to manipulate.
  • Shows usage history: It can exhibit a timeline of drug consumption, not only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drug presence in hair becomes noticeable after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variances might influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test actually assesses the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
