Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Boronda, California. When you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair samples, our experts are ready to assist with specialized hair testing solutions. With our centers nationwide, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches can be taken from the head or body to verify drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred option over conventional urine analysis. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests. Employers adhering to strict drug policies, legal bodies, and probation programs rely on hair tests due to their long detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days. This reliable method reduces cheating chances, although urine tests remain precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been acknowledged as a formidable technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substances by securing biomarkers in the structure of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp area, provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For testing beyond 10 panels or additional tests like EtG, 150mg of sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective tool for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, positive findings must be verified for legal validity. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a specimen is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples positive in Screening undergo pre-confirmation cleaning as needed. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is greatly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage trends: It reflects a pattern of drug use over a duration, rather than just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
