Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Brisbane, California. Whether it’s hair drug or alcohol testing you seek, we’re experts in the domain with centers available nationwide, ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, to proceed, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized testing.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a more favored method for drug assessment. Employers, court systems, and professionals handling substance abuse increasingly opt for these over the conventional urine tests. Hair tests are particularly popular among zero-tolerance employers, judicial bodies, and probationary cases. A key advantage lies in its enhanced detection range, spotlighting drug use over a span of up to 90 days with a supervised collection, making it tough to manipulate. Yet, urine tests maintain their precision when checking drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by embedding markers within the strands' structure. When taken from near the scalp, hair captures up to about a 3-month period for substance detection. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

To obtain the optimal 100mg sample for testing and validation, a 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp is required. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, it's advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for determining a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This phase assures that the sample was securely closed and shipped correctly, allocates an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data input not established by an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening represents an initial swift analysis for illicit drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly option to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates further verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, more hair is detached from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations far lower than those in alternate techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis a challenging procedure to execute.

To confirm a positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as appropriate. Each step from Accessioning through Confirmation conforms to the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is very challenging, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate past use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brisbane, CA, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, making it more reliable for determining long-term substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
