Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Camino Tassajara, California. If hair or alcohol testing is required, we excel in hair testing and have facilities in cities across the nation to provide testing services. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices for most tests. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various customized testing options.

In recent years, the approach to drug testing increasingly encompasses hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Businesses enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation often use hair tests. The key advantage of hair testing is the extended detection period for substances, reaching up to 90 days, with secure observation during sampling and minimal possibility of tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected nearest to the scalp, it can reveal evidence of substance use up to a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, the ideal quantity for thorough testing and confirmation. For EtG, extra options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in laboratory processing for a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial quick assessment for drug presence. While it is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the strand above the scalp, not the hair follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
