Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Colfax, California. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair assessments with centers across the country available for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific purposes.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent means of conducting drug testing. Many institutions, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine sample. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the courts, and those on probation utilize these tests for their main advantage: a detection period lasting up to 90 days. Collection is supervised, reducing the chance of deception. However, for recent drug use (within the last 5 days), urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term account of substances, encapsulating markers within the hair's developing fibers. Samples acquired near the scalp can present a detection period extending up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. In the context of head hair, this exclusively pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means of eliminating drug usage in a majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to hold in court. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional specimen hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All specimens with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair guidelines and in compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Yields historical data: It can demonstrate a drug usage pattern over time, instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It necessitates about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth inconsistencies may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
