In Contra Costa Centre, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we excel in this area with facilities across the U.S. generally requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair tests can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be customized for other analyses.

Recently, drug screenings more often involve hair follicle testing. This method is preferred by employers, the legal system, and substance specialists over urine tests. Employers, courts, and probation programs often mandate hair tests for their extensive 90-day detection capability, assured collection process, and resilience to manipulation. However, urine tests still excel in identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is retrieved close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximate 3-month timespan. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment with around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" signifies scalp hair alone, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering the sample initially into a lab's system. It includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that cannot be provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result in screening requires verification for court admissibility. Samples showing a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminarily positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect usage over a shorter period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a timeline of drug usage over months, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically require 5-7 days after use to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Diverse elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Reasons Why Hair Follicle Testing Exceeds Urine Testing in Contra Costa Centre, CA are numerous. A primary advantage includes a broader detection window, making it more effective in revealing long-term drug use patterns.

Traditional urine tests fall short in detecting past substance use over extended periods. Hair tests demonstrate superior accuracy and reliability due to their ability to uncover drug usage history up to three months prior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
