Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Country Club, California. For those in need of drug or alcohol analysis via hair samples, our company specializes in the process, with centers across the nation. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other specialized requests.

Recently, hair follicle exams have gained popularity for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often choose these over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary figures find them beneficial. The main advantage is the extended timeframe, detecting substances up to 90 days. It's unobtrusive and almost tamper-proof, though for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method, hair testing detects both drug and alcohol consumption. It chronicles a longer-term usage by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about three months of alcohol and drug consumption. It's easy to collect, rather tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of hair approximately 1.5 inches long, consisting of around 200 strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) near the scalp ensures 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or more extensive panels over 10, 150mg is preferable. We advise weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar amount of body hair is suitable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a lab drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is introduced into the lab system. It entails confirming the sample’s seal and shipping, assigning it a random LAN, and completing any necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective and useful to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly complex.

Positive results in Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter span.
  • Manipulation resistant: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, yielding more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers a record of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lacks in detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater expenses than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
