Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Cuyama, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across the nation to perform these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or other body parts for testing. We can assess hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor other hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the routine urine test. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle tests. The major advantage is its extended detection window of drug usage, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, which makes it exceedingly difficult to evade. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting very recent drug activity within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The detection of alcohol and drugs has been notably advanced by hair testing. Hair allows for a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An optimal sample for analysis and verification is a 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), yielding 100mg of hair. However, for EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening functions as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in many cases, a court-admissible result necessitates Confirmation of a positive screen. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are subjected to washing preceding Confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, thereby increasing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: It supplies an account of drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
