Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Davenport, California. When you require a hair assessment for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing spans across numerous cities nationwide. Testing centers are equipped to carry out these analyses using 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair in most scenarios. Various substances, including drugs and alcohol, can be identified with these tests.

There has been an increased inclination towards hair follicle drug analysis as a preferred method for testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often favor this approach over standard urine assessments. Hair tests are particularly ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies and for probationary monitoring, offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days. Although, for recent drug use detection within a 5-day timeframe, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair applies to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to why hair drug screening is the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Detectability of drugs in hair starts approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Davenport, CA, offers clear advantages over urine testing. With a longer detection period and resistance to tampering, it ensures superior accuracy in identifying substance use.

While traditional urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader window of detection, making them invaluable for employers seeking a thorough substance use history of their employees or applicants.

Extended Detection Window

In Davenport, CA, the hair follicle tests provide a remarkable detection window extending up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain extensive insights into an individual's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
