Specializing in comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive services in Del Rey, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we provide expert hair testing throughout all cities nationwide. Most tests need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Options for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair tests are available.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence as a method for screening. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor it over urine tests. Hair drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The advantage is a longer drug use detection period, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection that’s hard to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a formidable resource for identifying the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures biomarkers in its fiber strands, offering a record of substance use over an extended period. When gathered near the scalp, this method can detect alcohol and drugs for up to about three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's size) near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be substituted. Our reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair, excluding other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The comprehensive lab processing framework for a drug test result comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is preliminarily processed into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's an economical means for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with positive indications during Screening necessitate further verification.

If the Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking it as the most intricate drug screening method.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating deterrent: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Insightful historical data: It tracks a drug usage pattern over time, unlike identifying only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detectability in hair occurs roughly after 5-7 days of drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests in Del Rey, CA, mainly due to enhanced detection capability and reliability. Unlike traditional methods, hair follicle tests capture a detailed picture of substance use.

Employers favor hair tests for their superior accuracy, as they offer a broader time window and are challenging to falsify compared to standard urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

In Del Rey, CA, the primary benefit of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This allows a thorough review of an individual's drug use history.

This comprehensive timeframe grants employers a detailed substance use profile, providing insights into longer-term behaviors that are not possible with short-term focused testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Del Rey, CA, stand as a tamper-resistant solution to drug screening. The process minimizes the chances of adulteration, ensuring credible test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
