With locations in Desert Palms, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair or alcohol analysis is required, our specialization in hair testing and our nationwide centers ensure comprehensive and accessible services. Requirement includes having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically on the head, and it's suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or customized tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly choosing hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored for their extended detection capabilities of up to 90 days, and are conducted under observation, minimizing chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain the standard for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch length containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest that the specimen be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. Referencing head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen within a laboratory's framework. This step encompasses confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not documented by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any specimens with presumptive positive results in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen presents presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to fake: It is exceedingly difficult to cheat a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: It can reveal a sequence of drug usage over an extended duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inapt for detecting recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently referenced as "hair follicle tests," the assessment itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
