Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Diamond Springs, CA, Accredited Drug Testing stands ready for your hair or alcohol test needs. Our nationwide network includes all cities, offering specialized hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have grown in prominence, increasingly supplanting traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strong no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with being collected under observation, leaving little room for tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered from the area near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprised of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp supplies 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. In terms of head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other kinds (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test outcome in the laboratory includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is recorded into the laboratory system. This phase checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns an Arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to deduce the non-use of drugs in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate an additional verification step.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex testing method.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before verification, all presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug exams can trace drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Deception is very challenging with a hair drug test, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical usage data: It can illustrate a trend of drug consumption over a duration, not merely the most recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
