In Drytown, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If hair or alcohol testing is needed, our expertise in hair testing ensures thorough and accurate results. Numerous testing centers nationwide, including all cities, provide convenient access for hair testing. Typically, hair from the crown or body is used, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol (ETG), or other substances.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor this method over urine tests. Hair tests are preferred for their longer detection period of up to 90 days, and they're conducted under supervision, making them difficult to cheat. While effective, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests still remain very accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. By scalp hair, we mean head hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. It includes confirming the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples indicating presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower intensities compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and under the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenge to deceive: Preventing tampering in a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods available in Drytown, CA, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior choice. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a more extensive detection window, proving invaluable for employers. Hair testing captures a more comprehensive picture of substance use history, enhancing workplace safety and policy compliance.

The distinct advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing begin with its unparalleled detection range. Employers and legal authorities benefit from the broader historical insight it offers, reducing workplace risks associated with drug misuse. The increased reliability of hair testing adds another layer of security for Drytown institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
