In East Imperial, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers are spread across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, obtainable from any body part. These tests can identify drugs and alcohol, along with tailored hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and addiction professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, legal proceedings, and probation situations due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days. Despite their reliability, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance use for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be used as an alternative. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of inputting a sample into a lab system. It entails ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary, quick drug-of-abuse check. Though Screening serves as an economical method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a favorable screen requires verification for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive at the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any favorable screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug testing is tough to evade, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The argument for choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests in East Imperial, CA centers on the superior detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing offers a much broader detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This comprehensive visibility provides employers and institutions with a clearer understanding of an individual's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
