Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in East Los Angeles, California. For any hair drug or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair testing, with locations Nationwide ready to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be sampled. Hair testing options may include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized assessments.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased in drug screening procedures. Many companies, legal entities, and substance professionals now prefer them over common urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationees benefit from the extensive detection window hair tests offer, typically covering up to 90 days. These are collected under supervision, making them nearly foolproof. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A specimen of hair measuring 1.5 inches in length, consisting of around 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and corroboration. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach for discarding drug use in most specimens, a positive screen needs validation to be legally acceptable. Any specimens that show preliminary positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably intricate to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is attained using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It delivers a sequence of drug use over time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

East Los Angeles, CA sees more benefits with hair testing over urine methods. Hair testing boasts superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent drug use, hair testing offers an extended detection window, reflecting a broader history of substance use. This advantage ensures a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's habits.

The reliability of hair follicle testing is evident in its favored status among employers. While traditional urine tests serve a purpose, hair tests substantiate drug-free environments with greater certainty. Their robust nature makes them a go-to choice for organizations and courts enforcing strict policies.

Extended Detection Window

In East Los Angeles, CA, hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
