Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in East Oakdale, California. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled, with nationwide testing centers ready to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing preferences.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug testing. More and more employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. These tests offer a significant advantage due to their extended detection window, which is up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them almost impossible to deceive. However, urine tests remain most precise for screening recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly acknowledged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to a quarter of a year for alcohol and substances. Hair is uncomplicated to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a supplementary verification.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug assessments are among the toughest to administer.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to fraud: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, instead of solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug assessments typically incur a greater expense compared to other testing strategies.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in East Oakdale, CA

Hair tests surpass traditional urine tests in both detection accuracy and reliability. Where urine testing detects recent use, hair testing unveils drug use across a much larger timeframe. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
