Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Palo Alto, California. Whether you are looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures nationwide availability in all cities, equipped for conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required, providing options for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. This approach is being favored by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Organizations with strict drug policies, such as zero-tolerance directives, often opt for hair follicle tests which track drug use for an extended period, typically up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under supervision and are virtually fraud-proof. However, urine tests are more effective for detecting drug use within the most recent 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures indicators of alcohol and other substances by embedding them within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a timeframe of roughly three months. This method of collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be sourced, a corresponding amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves bringing a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any missing information not supplied electronically.

Screening is the preliminary test for signs of drug use. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in many samples, any positive initial result needs confirmation for legal validity. Samples flagged as probably positive during Screening require a further Confirmation test.

When a sample tests probably positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This phase isolates drugs from hair at concentrations lower than those in other testing methods (like urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive screenings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, all samples assumed positive are cleaned before confirmation. The completion of the laboratory processes from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Minimized tampering: Cheating is challenging in hair testing, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks usage over time: Offers insights into patterns of drug use rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot track recent activity: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Typically, hair tests are more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Despite often being mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the method examines the hair shaft, not the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
