Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Sonora, California. For those required to undergo a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing facilities in all cities across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often utilize hair follicle tests. The main benefit of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected under observation, and very difficult to cheat. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a vital method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives the long-term usage of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to an estimated 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively scarce in terms of tampering, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair might be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves checking the sample's seal and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminarily rapid examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive outcome must undergo Confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need further verification through Confirmation.

If the sample appears positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug testing as the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process starting from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect substance use up to 90 days, while urine tests display a brief detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceptionally hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug-testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being labeled "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Sonora, CA, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests. The precision of hair testing surpasses urine tests by providing more accurate substance detection, boosting reliability.

Employers and professionals prefer hair testing for its superior capacity to detect a broader timeframe of drug use. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are more difficult to manipulate, ensuring trustworthy outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
