Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services at Edwards AFB, California. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, we have centers nationwide ready to assist with your testing needs. Hair, preferably between 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body, is used for accurate analysis. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit specific requirements.

The past few years have seen a rise in the use of hair follicle tests as the preferred method for drug detection. This technique is favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine tests. Companies, legal systems, and probation services prefer this method due to its extended detection time of up to 90 days. Hair tests provide observed and nearly cheat-proof results, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent five-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by integrating biomarkers in the hair's growing fibers. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal a detection span of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Employ a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent mass of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering a sample into the lab's system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not already facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples during Screening undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screens is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a timeline of drug use over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When examining the benefits of hair follicle versus traditional urine testing in Edwards AFB, CA, several factors set hair testing apart. Hair testing's ability to detect substance use over a more extended period provides superior insight into an individual's history. This contrasts with urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window, making hair testing a preferable option for comprehensive analysis.

Employers benefit from hair follicle testing due to its improved accuracy and reliability. These advantages make hair testing a more effective tool for implementing zero-tolerance policies and monitoring ongoing compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing offers an extended detection window, providing a detailed history of substance use up to 90 days in Edwards AFB, CA. This feature is invaluable for employers seeking a comprehensive overview of an individual’s drug or alcohol intake, surpassing the limited timeframe of traditional tests.

With its prolonged detection period, hair follicle testing enables employers to assess an applicant or employee’s long-term habits. This depth of insight aids in making well-informed decisions when evaluating a person's suitability for hire or ongoing employment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Edwards AFB, CA, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing significantly reduces risks of sample adulteration, providing dependable results. This reliability stems from the rigorous processes used during collection and analysis, ensuring that results remain uncontaminated.

The integrity of hair follicle testing is central to its esteemed reputation. It offers employers and other organizations assurance that test results accurately reflect an individual's substance use habits, devoid of manipulation or deceit.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
