Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in El Granada, California, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for all kinds of hair and alcohol testing needs. With locations nationwide, our centers provide reliable services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol, or be tailored for specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, it offers a stricter alternative to urine testing. This method benefits from a longer detection window of 90 days and is conducted under supervised conditions, making it highly secure. However, urine tests remain effective for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as a substantial method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair offers a lasting record of alcohol and drug usage. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month detection frame for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or comprehensive tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step wherein a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling in any missing information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid initial check for drug abuse. While this step is economical for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, positive results need further confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any preliminary positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test results in heightened accuracy.
  • Historical insights: These tests can outline drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing modes.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair strands.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the subcutaneous hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
