In Eldridge, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, they are experts in these services. Nationwide testing centers are available to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer them to standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, aid court decisions, and assist with probation monitoring. Their main advantage is the extensive detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, and largely tamper-proof. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing roughly 200 strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, added tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the hair specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" solely pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional necessary data input not supplied via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug usage in most samples, any positive screenings require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with a positive presumption in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations than found in most other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Confirming a positive screening result involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation as necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and meets the accreditation standards ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, leading to more credible results.
  • Yields historical insight: It highlights a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Does not show recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing incurs more costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and unique hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test is sometimes called a "hair follicle test", but it examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
