Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Elsinore Valley, California. For individuals needing a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialization in hair testing ensures accurate results, with locations available nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body suffices. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. It is now preferred by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation services favor hair follicle tests due to their extended drug use detection period, which can span up to 90 days. These tests offer observed collections which are difficult to tamper with, although urine tests remain unmatched for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. With samples taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a period of roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), provided close to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If head hair isn't accessible, body hair in equivalent amounts is a viable alternative. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is divided into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is systematically processed into the laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transmitted, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not facilitated by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substance abuse. While it is an economical way to identify drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening require additional verification.

If Screening returns a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair screening notably challenging.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, lending credibility to the results.
  • Historical pattern: It reveals drug use patterns over an extended period, unlike recent use alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not indicate recent use: Detection in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days after drug usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
