Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Fairmead, California. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all U.S. cities, including the ability to conduct hair tests. Typically, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol / ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analyses. Many workplaces, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine samples. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those under probation often opt for hair drug testing. The principal advantage is a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can give an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand sample, consisting of about 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipping procedures were properly followed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that return presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of substance use over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test in fact examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fairmead, CA
When it comes to drug testing, the hair follicle method stands out for good reason. Its superior detection timeframe, extending up to 90 days, eclipses the brief window of urine tests. Employers in Fairmead value this comprehensive approach, ensuring thorough drug use assessments that urine tests might miss due to their shorter detection period.

Individuals opting for hair testing benefit from its reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair samples resist tampering, providing genuine insights into a person's substance history. The meticulous nature of hair analysis means employers consistently receive precise information, minimizing the risk of error in drug detection processes.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
