In Foothill Ranch, CA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests, an expert in alcohol and drug detection. Nationwide, we're equipped for hair analysis utilizing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body in most situations, customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become integral to drug testing. Favored by employers, courts, and substance professionals over urine tests, they're ideal for zero-tolerance policies and probation. They're collected under observation, deterring tampering, and offer a 90-day detection period. Yet, for recent use (past 5 days), urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers from drugs and alcohol in its fibers, offering a detailed view of usage over time. When harvested near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, comparatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

To obtain an optimal sample for analysis and verification, approximately 200 strands measuring 1.5 inches (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) cut proximate to the scalp yield the ideal 100mg of hair. For comprehensive testing like EtG and panels beyond 10, 150mg is preferred. It is advised to utilize a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar body hair volume is suitable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for generating drug test results encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially introduced to the lab system. This phase includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, positive results must be authenticated to be valid in legal settings. All inconclusive positive results from Screening necessitate further verification.

Should Screening show a presumptive positive, additional hair is processed for Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances at lower concentrations than those typical of methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening particularly complex to execute.

Confirmation follows any positive Screening outcomes using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples are cleaned as needed. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days prior, contrasted with the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Chronological insights: It charts drug usage over time, unlike methods focused on recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing costs more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Foothill Ranch, CA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests due to superior detection accuracy. It provides a broader view of drug use, identifying substances that may be missed by urine tests. The reliability of hair testing ensures more comprehensive screenings in workplace policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection window is a key advantage of hair follicle testing in Foothill Ranch, CA. Unlike other methods, it traces drug use back up to 90 days, offering a thorough assessment of an individual’s substance history. This allows employers to view a long-term snapshot of behavior, ensuring a thorough evaluation.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Foothill Ranch, CA, hair follicle tests reduce sample tampering risks. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are collected under direct observation, minimizing manipulation. This method promises authentic, reliable results that are widely trusted by employers and legal institutions for accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
