Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Forest Meadows, California. For those needing a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis, providing services Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation. Their advantage lies in a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection, reducing the chance of tampering. However, a urine test remains most precise for very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline monitoring alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We recommend utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This entails verifying that the sample remains sealed and has been properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to cheating: Hair drug tests are very challenging to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: They can demonstrate drug usage patterns over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Forest Meadows, CA, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests with their superior detection capability. Urine tests may fall short in revealing long-term use, while hair tests provide a comprehensive detection period. The consistency and reliability of hair testing make it a preferred choice, allowing employers and legal entities to confidently assess drug use over months rather than days.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Forest Meadows, CA, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. This method offers insights into substance use up to 90 days prior, surpassing the capabilities of other testing forms. Such a timeframe enables a thorough evaluation of an individual’s habits, providing a broader picture for decisions, including hiring and retention, where long-term substance history is crucial.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Forest Meadows, CA, minimizes the possibility of manipulation. This method remains secure against common adulteration tactics often associated with other types of tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
