Located in Goshen, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol assessments, we have a widespread network of testing locations across the nation ready to accommodate your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Options include checking for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly in recent times, replacing the conventional urine tests for many. This method is increasingly mandated by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists. Suitable for enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probationary requirements, the primary advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain predominant for recent use detection within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of up to about 90 days. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step ensures that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive findings from Screening must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening need additional confirmation.

When a sample presents a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This step entails extracting drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides a historical overview: It furnishes a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in the hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Goshen, CA, by offering superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a broader window of detection, enabling the identification of drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike the limited timeframe of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
