Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Harbison Canyon, CA. When requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we operate testing centers across all cities nationally capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing requirements.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening methodologies has surged. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly ask for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary systems. Hair follicle tests offer an extended drug detection window up to 90 days, with supervised collection that prevents cheating. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a permanent archive for alcohol and drug biomarkers, trapping them within the growing hair fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug exposure for a period of up to nearly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. When scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory system, which includes confirmation that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples flagged positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from screening are confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days, as compared to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Cheating is challenging: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: Provides an overview of drug habits over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing options.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Typically labeled as "hair follicle tests", this analysis specifically examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
