Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Hat Creek, California. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers located in every city Nationwide capable of conducting a hair analysis. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary in most scenarios. Hair tests are flexible to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts insist on hair drug screenings rather than standard urine tests. These tests attract employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation given the extended detection window of up to 90 days, the mandatory observation during sample collection, and the difficulty in manipulating results. Nevertheless, for drug use within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positively in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in methodologies like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over traditional urine tests in Hat Creek, CA, thanks to its superior ability to accurately identify substance use. While urine tests provide short-term detection, hair tests analyze a more extended usage timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
