Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Helm, California. If you are seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers Nationwide ready to assist. A sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable testing configurations.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug screening in recent times. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering unlikely. For recent activity detection (up to 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent resource for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeframe of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately three-month period of detection for alcohol and substance usage. Hair offers straightforward collection, is relatively resistant to tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A section measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the equivalent of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in a legal setting. Any samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial supply and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
